From Udon Thani Airport, the main nightlife area around Soi Sampantanit, Central Udon and the railway station is only a short taxi or Grab ride away. Unlike Bangkok, there is no lengthy journey from the airport into town.
Flight prices vary enormously according to the day and how early you book. Low cost fares can sometimes make flying only slightly more expensive than a sleeper train.
If you are spending only two or three nights in Udon Thani, I would fly.
Overnight Train From Bangkok
The train is slower, but it can actually be a very good way to reach Udon Thani.
Bangkok trains for Udon Thani now depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, not the old Hua Lamphong station. That is worth remembering because outdated travel articles still occasionally send visitors to the wrong Bangkok station.
There are currently three daily Bangkok to Udon Thani trains. The daytime Express leaves around 8:45 am and reaches Udon Thani at approximately 4:55 pm. Two evening trains depart at approximately 8:25 pm and 9:25 pm and arrive early the following morning.
The best choice is usually Special Express Train 25, particularly if you can reserve a second class air conditioned sleeper.
It leaves Bangkok in the evening, you sleep on the train, and you arrive in Udon Thani at around 5:40 am. Current sleeper fares are roughly 900 to 1,100 baht, depending on the berth and booking method.
The arrival is early, so check whether your hotel will hold your luggage or allow early check in.
The big advantage is that you effectively combine transportation with one night’s accommodation.
There is another important advantage for this particular trip: Udon Thani Railway Station is right beside the part of town where you probably want to stay.
UD Town, Central Udon, Soi Sampantanit, Day and Night and Nutty Park are all close to the station.
You can step off the train and already be in the right part of Udon Thani.
Bus From Bangkok
Long distance buses are the cheapest straightforward option.
Thailand’s state bus company currently operates a direct first class service from Bangkok Mo Chit 2 to Udon Thani. The route is approximately 561 kilometers and the current fare is around 560 baht. The Bangkok departure currently leaves at 8:30 pm, making it another overnight option.
Private companies also operate this route, so there are normally more choices than the single government service.
The bus makes sense if you are traveling on a tight budget and do not care about spending most of the night in a seat.
Personally, if the difference is only a few hundred baht, I would take the sleeper train instead. You can lie down, move around and arrive directly beside the central Udon Thani nightlife district.
Driving From Bangkok
Driving gives you the most flexibility but makes less sense if Udon Thani itself is your only destination.
The road distance is roughly 560 kilometers, normally requiring around eight hours depending on Bangkok traffic, stops and road conditions.
A car becomes much more useful if Udon Thani is part of a larger Isan trip involving places such as Khon Kaen, Nong Khai or the countryside around Udon.
Inside Udon Thani itself you do not need one.
The central nightlife district is extremely compact, and Grab or local transportation can easily handle trips to Oscar Soapy, Chawala, U Club and other venues outside the immediate Soi Sampan area.
Getting to Udon Thani From Vientiane and Nong Khai
Udon Thani is also extremely convenient if you are coming from Laos.
Nong Khai is just north of Udon Thani on the Lao border, and trains continue between Udon Thani, Nong Khai and Vientiane.
Current railway schedules include services connecting Vientiane and Nong Khai with Udon Thani, making it possible to combine Udon with a Laos trip without returning to Bangkok first.
Road transportation between Nong Khai and Udon Thani is also easy.
This makes Udon Thani a particularly logical stop for someone traveling between Bangkok and Vientiane.
Which Option Is Best?
Fly if you only have a few days. The flight is around one hour and Udon Thani Airport is close to everything.
Take the sleeper train if the journey itself appeals to you. You leave Bangkok at night, save a hotel night and wake up almost directly beside the Udon Thani nightlife district.
Take the bus if saving money is the priority.
Drive if Udon Thani is part of a larger Isan road trip.
For most visitors reading this guide, my choice would be simple: fly from Bangkok, stay two or three nights near Soi Sampantanit, and fly back. Udon Thani is inexpensive enough that there is little reason to lose an entire day traveling unless you specifically enjoy the train journey.
