I walked in around 10 p.m., and the place was already alive. The inside is a long rectangle, with a big open floor, a double-tiered central stage, and dark mirrored walls that make everything feel more expansive—and more dangerous.

I found a seat on the right-hand side, up on a raised cushioned booth that gave me a perfect diagonal view of the main stage. The seat was a little sticky from spilled beer, the small round table had two lady drink menus tucked under a wet ashtray, and the air smelled like a mix of perfume, sweat, and sanitizer.
